The Progressive Los Angeles Network (PLAN)
Los Angeles has many problems (as mentioned previously) but the PLAN has proposed an agenda for sustainable living. There is emphasis on issues ranging from transport, the urban environment, food and nutrition, to economic development, housing and workers' rights.
Some of PLAN's Proposals:
- Require employers to pay their workers a 'decent' wage
- Provide community benefits such as childcare and affordable housing
- Increase urban parks and clean up contaminated brownfield sites
- Promote clean fuel vehicles and green energy
- Require developers to build affordable housing in all new residential developments
- Attract food markets, farmers markets and community gardens
- Improve public transport with 'clean' buses and new rapid bus lines
- Universal low fare cards that allow easy transfer between buses and trains
- Promote safe, walkable and bikeable neighbourhoods
- Promote smart growth land use where people can drive less and live nearer to where they work, shop and play
- Ban new 'big box' retail stores which undermine local retail and community activity and steer new future developments to locations near existing and planned transit stops
